Lesson Title:  Claymation Films- connect to the Revolutionary War in Social Studies

                                       

Lesson Objective:

 

Given discussion and images of stop motion animation, movement in artwork, and collaboration, students demonstrate their understanding by collaborating to create a stop motion animation film and independently discussing movement in artwork

Strategies and Activities:

 

1.  View/discuss a Claymation film from the previous 5th graders to introduce the lesson.

2.  View/discuss collaboration together by creating T-chart of what it looks and sound like.

3.  Demonstrate how to begin sculpting your clay characters (using Sculpey) for your film.

4.  Pass out materials and assign students to their pre-organized groups (4-5 students per group).

5.  Assist students while they work.

6. Clean up with 7 minutes left.

 

 

Materials and Supplies:

 

1.  SMARTboard

2.  Claymation film example from Vimeo acct.

3.  students’ story maps created with their classroom teachers

4.  Sculpey clay (multi colored)

5.  clay sculpting tools

6.  Ziploc bags for each groups’ materials

 

 

 

 

 

 

Accommodations and modifications for different levels of learners:

 

Students with fine motor skill difficulties will be able to use larger or smaller tools for drawing.  When available, these students will also be provided with pencil adaptors. 

 

Visual, verbal, and hands on teaching techniques will be utilized to accommodate all types of learners.

 

 

Technology Integration

 

The smartboard will be used to view/discuss a Claymation film and to create a T-chart.

 

 

Assessment:

 

This project will be assessed in 3 categories:  I can discuss movement, I can collaborate with others, and I can compose a stop motion animation film.
